James Naughtie was up to his usual tricks this morning, discussing social care for the elderly with Sir Jeremy Beecham, Labour vice-chair of the Local Government Association (LGA).

The interview's style was civilized and friendly (with a supportive 'yes' here and an 'mmm' of agreement there, as well as an amiable joke), and the whole thing sounded like two old pals in slippers chatting over a warm glass of mulled wine.

Naughtie was careful to report Brown's attack on Cameron ("The prime minister has accused the Conservatives of a disgraceful advertisement featuring a gravestone speaking of Labour's death tax") before quietly and with a straight face (or straight voice) saying "There is, of course, a government personal care bill before parliament which ministers say is going to help 400,000 people in different ways". Gratuitously, he later dropped in a reference to Justin Webb's disgraceful (but to Naughtie 'interesting') interview with Andrew Lansley, who he said "had to admit on this programme that David Cameron didn't know he was taking part".
